With many new popular attractions, like The Gathering Place, Tulsa is an up-and-coming city that should not be underestimated. One of Tulsa’s stand-out features, located in the Blue Dome District, is The Boxyard.
Established in late 2016, the outdoor shopping center is constructed entirely of shipping containers. From bars to boutiques to candy shops, each numbered unit hosts a different local shop.
The concept is clean and open— drawing in guests, like myself, to spend some time exploring the distinctive area of Tulsa. The atmosphere is modern and relaxed. Walking around the first level, I pass boutiques like Beau and Arrow; a candy shop, and Sabores; a Mexican cuisine. There are even a few Lime Scooters you can hop on to cruise the area. There is an open deck with more seating, more shops, and a bar on the second level.
With all glass windows, wired railing, bright wood flooring and vibrant colors, The Boxyard reminds me of a beachfront shopping center. Each shop gives off its own vibe. Some, like Okie Dokie, covered the container walls. Others, like Beau and Arrow, leave them open and show off the quirkiness of this area.
Andrea Nieves, an employee at Okie Dokie, says, “It’s just a really unique concept, it’s a good place for businesses to get started.” She goes on to state that many businesses, like science shop STEMcell, outgrow The Boxyard and end up opening up other locations. Stores also try out new products and ideas at The Boxyard— so you never know what you’ll find.
You could also simply get some fresh air and enjoy the special ambience. The view from the second story is one of the best views of downtown Tulsa I have seen. Being on the edge of Downtown Tulsa, the picturesque view itself attracts many people, even photographers. Tulsa-native and The Boxyard shopper Meghan Grünhof states, “I have friends who are photographers that have done photo shoots here. It’s a cool place.”
Going into summer, everyone is thinking about what new adventures await them. If you’re looking for a fresh and fun place to shop, grab a bite to eat, get a few drinks or just hang out and enjoy the view, The Boxyard will not disappoint. I know I’ll be returning with friends and family this summer. See you there!
