In early March, trailer teasers of Todd Phillips’s upcoming film “Joker” hit the internet sending Batman and DC universe fans alike talking. The film will star Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic villain as well as Robert De Niro.

The first official trailer was released April 3rd and gave a little taste of what’s to come with Phoenix’s portrayal of the Joker. The trailer provides a sinister quote from the Joker himself, “I used to think that my life was a tragedy, but now I realize, it’s a comedy.” Based on the trailer alone, the film has a dark tone, as one should expect with Martin Scorsese tagged as a producer on the project. The film seems to be an origin story, of how Arthur Fleck/ the Joker fell into his life of crime and became Batman’s worst enemy. According to IMDB, the plot will surround the Joker as “a failed stand-up comedian” who is driven insane and into the life of a “psychopathic murderer.” Since the film is set in the 80's, Bruce Wayne has not yet become Batman, however a young Bruce Wayne is rumored to make an appearance. So far this is all that has been said about the film, but as the release date comes closer it’s expected for more trailers and plot details to be released.

In a statement made by Warner Bros. “the film is an exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

“Joker” is officially set to release into theaters Oct. 4th, 2019.
