Maggie Rogers first full-length album “Heard it in a Past Life” debuted mid-January to positive reviews. She quickly shot into a world tour which she is currently in the spring United States portion of. I was able to witness a show on Rogers tour as she performed at The Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri. What I witnessed brought me to tears. Yes, it was that good.
The venue had been sold out for multiple months and the room was completely full. As the band slowly walked out, the crowd cheered, but as Maggie stepped foot into the audience view, the room roared.
Maggie smiled, and then begun to cry. She thanked the audience profusely for supporting her one of the many times she did this during the night. After she finished crying, she jumped right into playing the records from new album.
The feeling in the room was electric. The audience closed their collective eyes and just danced and absorbed the environment. Everyone was singing, moving, feeling.
After a couple songs, Rogers stopped the band to explain that she wanted her concerts to be a place to express yourself, and to collectively breathe and come together as one group who loves and supports each other. She smiled, thanked the audience again, and continued her set.
I was completely shocked. Maggie had full control of her concert, and she made sure it was a place of acceptance. As she sang, she laughed and danced around the stage. She whipped her hair around, jerked her head, and jumped. She was completely content and free; it was almost like watching a moving painting.
She would stop the music multiple times that night to thank the audience for their support, telling them that she is living her dream and it’s all thanks to people like us. In the end, it was a concert that was unbelievable. The air was clear and free, everyone was happy. It didn’t feel real – the concert was almost a church service. Concerts like these rarely exist, so you must witness something like the “Heard it in a Past Life” tour sometime in your life, it is complete freedom and expression.
