After years and years of talk about a sequel to Space Jam, staring Michael Jordan and all the beloved Looney Tunes cast; one has finally come to light. The original film followed Jordan, the human basketball player, and Bugs Bunny and his friends teaming up to win a basketball game against a rival team of aliens.
The sequel will star LeBron James and all your favorite Looney Tunes from the original. Though this film isn’t set to release until 2021 and most of the plot surrounding this film is still under wraps, we can all be assured that this long awaited sequel will stay true to the original energy of the first film.
Space Jam released at number one at the box office back in 1996, despite having some mixed reviews on whether the Looney Tunes would cross well with some of the NBA’s biggest stars. According to Cinema Blend, the original grossed over $230 million dollars worldwide and is still one the “highest grossing basketball movies of all time.”
While talks of a sequel have always been in the works, Space Jam 2 didn’t get a green light until LeBron James got involved. James recently started his acting career when he starred alongside Bill Hader and Amy Schumer in Trainwerck back in 2015. Once James’ name was put with the film, I’m sure Hollywood put more interest in the film- making “just talk”, a reality.
Like most sequels that are 10 plus years in the making; Space Jam 2 most likely has a greater appeal to an older generation. I remember watching this movie on repeat when I was little, so I was excited to hear that a sequel was actually happening. But, because of the animation aspect of this film it will be something all generations can enjoy.
Space Jam 2 is officially set to release into theaters July 16, 2021.
