In 2017 Jordan Peele made his directorial debut with "Get Out", whichgrossed over $30 million at the box office and received rave reviews from critics. It seems that all the buzz Peele received from his first film has made moviegoers even more excited for his new movie “Us”. On its opening weekend, “Us”raked in $70.2 million according to Empire Online.
“Us”is a horror film; despite Peele’s constant tweets about what genre the film actually falls under. There is a bit of comic relief, though the majority of the film is filled with enough terror to creep you out even after you leave the theater. The film follows a family who one night comes face to face with their doppelgangers after an apparent home invasion.
In an interview for NPR, Peele gave a little back ground on the film saying, "It starts with the fear that I can't explain. This idea that if I saw myself on the street, you immediately know that one of you might go. There's only room for one. And on top of that, if you see yourself, and yourself smiles back at you, you know the other one has the upper hand."
According to Peele, “[the film] makes you question your identity.” We know ourselves better than anyone so, when we are put face to face with a someone who looks just like us and seemingly is the same as us, we are going to be scared. I think this is what Peele was going for in this film. If forced to deal with this unknown part of ourselves, we see how terrifying that can be. Peele said his direction for this film was to create something that was real. This might be a more exaggerated look at a realistic situation but it still makes you think.
"Us" is in theaters everywhere now and if you like horror movies and if you liked Peele’s first movie "Get Out", then this one is a must see.
